Composed of striking arrangements of centuries old traditional folk songs alongside deeply personal and introspective originals written by Sam Kelly and longtime Lost Boys collaborator Jamie Francis, Dreamers Dawn, charts an exciting new path for the Norfolk-based artist. Since his debut EP in 2013, Sam Kelly has become a hugely respected player in the UK folk scene, releasing multiple albums to critical acclaim including Pretty Peggy (Navigator Records, 2017) and 2021’s The Wishing Tree released on Kate Rusby’s Pure Records, and earning praise from many of folk’s luminaries. The Lost Boys, nominated for Best Group at 2018’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, have been lauded for their artful playing and synchronicity that is heard throughout Dreamers Dawn. Written, produced and recorded between Kelly’s and Francis’ home studios, what started as a duo album quickly developed into one of their most bombastic, joyful, poignant and accessible collaborations to date. Featuring the talents of his backing band The Lost Boys, Kelly weaves trad folk elements into songs with pop sensibility, resulting in music that is sonically massive yet some of his most personal yet. Including socially relevant songs that tackle modern themes of mental health and chronic illness (Til Sleep Comes Calling), the rise of nationalist populism (The Old Deceiver) to the communal experience of live music (Dreamers Dawn), and our place in the universe (In the Cold/In The Dark), Dreamers Dawn marks the most self-penned tracks on a Sam Kelly album. Naturally, these tracks sit alongside the masterfully crafted interpretations of traditional song which have earned Kelly critical acclaim over his career, from the fantastic interplay of ‘The Bold Privateer’ and the riotous ‘Gallows Pole’ to ‘The Lincolnshire Poacher’ and the wonderful closer ‘The Dark Eyed Sailor.’
