What GURU GURU brought to the stage in the 1960s and early 1970s may well have been seen as shocking, even scandalous. While their sold-out shows were cherished by their massive fan base, GURU GURU were condemned by some politicians and public gures for living under the same roof as a commune, enjoying hallucinogenic drugs and sharing their political views on a regular basis, reading out statements during performances. But GURU GURU were much more than the enfants terribles of the German music scene and pioneers of a new musical genre. In 1976, they were the rst German band to perform at the now legendary WDR Rockpalast. The group played a lead part in the German TV crime show Tatort (German for crime scene) in an episode called “Notwehr” in the same year. In 1972 they performed a memorable show at the Germersheim festival (Germany) after Pink Floyd in front of an audience of over 100.000. They co-founded the annual Finkenbach Festival (Odenwald, Germany) with the Finkenbach re department in 1977, regularly headlining until 2019. Fun fact: in 1996, Mani Neumeier was the rst German musician to get his own wax gure in Madame Tussaud’s wax museum in Tokyo.) Five years after their last studio release, Rotate (2018, In-Akustik), GURU GURU are back with eleven brand new songs on their new album, The Incredible World Of Guru Guru. This 34th studio effort shows how GURU GURU, with a back catalogue of over 40 releases, have remained true to themselves. An open mind is needed to dive into the GURU GURU cosmos, yet the band’s new offering, The Incredible World Of Guru Guru is fascinating, experimental, brilliant, somehow crazy and absolutely incredible, just as its title says. The GURU GURU Groove goes on!
