Popis:
• This overdue double CD by Johnny's brother Dorsey Burnette on Bear Family Records® fills a gap in our extensive Burnette retrospective! • Limited, numbered collector's edition, 1000 copies worldwide! • 20 unreleased tracks on disc or record for the first time! • Between 1962 and 1965, outstanding recordings were made that show a hitherto unknown side of Dorsey: his passion for R'n'R, country and soul music. • The double album provides the complete recordings for Reprise and Motown's sub-label Mel-o-dy. • Carefully remastered recordings. • Extensive and well-researched liner notes with biographical details by Chicago music historian Bill Dahl plus a discography by Nico Feuerbach in the lavishly illustrated booklet.
Dorsey Burnette wore a lot of musical hats during the early years of his prolific career. Ferocious bass-slapping rockabilly with The Rock ‘n Roll Trio, prolific hit songwriter with his brother Johnny for Ricky Nelson, a hitmaker in his own right with the 1960 pop chart-climbers (There Was A) Tall Oak Tree and Hey Little One, and a producer whose assorted assignments included a Little Stevie Wonder session for Tamla. Much of Dorsey’s early heyday has been amply represented in Bear Family’s catalog over the years, but one bountiful period overlooked until now receives a thorough investigation on the new two-CD set ’The Complete Reprise and Motown Recordings plus... (1962-1965).’ Its 45 tracks include everything Burnette released on Frank Sinatra’s Reprise label as well as on Motown’s short-lived Mel-o-dy imprint and scattered singles from the same era for Lama and Imperial. That’s just the lineup on disc one. The second CD boasts 20 previously unheard tracks expanding Dorsey’s catalog even further, ranging from intriguing originals that he wrote with Wrecking Crew bassist Joe Osborn to distinctive renditions of Gotta Travel On and Honey Come Back. Dorsey’s deep-toned pipes were never less than satisfying; this collection restores some of his rarest sides to print at last!
Featuring a multitude of musical titans Vince Gill, Tim O'Brien, and Ricky Skaggs to name a few -- all contributing to the exceptional sound that Burns strives for. Inspired by the textures of the south, Burns compares the theme of the project to the feeling of listening to "Southern Nights" by Allen Toussaint, where the storytelling traditions of Appalachia meet the twang of the Deep South.
A consummate picker and the master of economic understatement and pristine taste, guitar-for-hire JAMES BURTON has carved out a reputation as the ultimate sideman, whose eloquent licks embellished and enhanced everything he played on. Rightly deified for his work with Ricky Nelson and much later, Elvis Presley, he laid down the blueprint for late 60s/early 70s Country-Rock, and has continued to ply his trade into the 21st Century. This compilation presents a unique snapshot of his early career as a sideman, initially as a teenager, recording in Louisiana. Featured artists include Dale Hawkins, Bob Luman, David Houston, Bobby Lee Trammell, Ricky Nelson, Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell, alongside less readily-known names like James Wilson & The Jimmie-Cats, The Shadows, Maylon Humphries, Tommy Cassel and The Shacklefords, plus a rare, live solo performance recorded at the Town Hall Party. As you would doubtless expect, this set includes a number of collectable rarities you’ll be hard pushed to find elsewhere on CD.
Sam Burton’s upcoming second album, Dear Departed, was produced by Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, Margo Price) at his Topanga Canyon studio with some of the best studio players in LA. Together, Wilson and Burton achieved a sound that doesn’t descend into retro pastiche, but rather becomes an evocative echo, a dream of the past. In scope, it finds Burton using a far bigger canvas than on his acclaimed 2020 debut I Can Go With You, giving the emotions therein a new sense of urgency and intensity. Burton has a knack for mining pure Laurel Canyon AM gold. Pastoral string arrangements bloom in the background of Sam’s striking honeyed vocals - like a modern-day Campbell, Orbison, or Nilsson.
